American Electric Power Company, Inc. (AEP)

CAPS Rating:
*****

A public utility holding company whose public utility subsidiaries have traditionally provided electric service, consisting of generation, transmission and distribution, on an integrated basis to their retail customers.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

AEP is currently undervalued by at least 10% and is set to post big gains, pending passage of favorable legislation in Ohio, which has its greatest customer base. AEP has never missed a dividend payment and, as a utility, is one of the traditional bastions of any well-balanced portfolio.

Here is a five-star stock with at least 50 all-stars picking it to outperform, and it is within 5% of its 52-week low.

Why not? I don't see a top bull pitch and AEP is close to their 52 week low. Besides the markets conditions make this one of the safest time to swing trade electricity stocks. AEP is worth putting in a real portfolio.

Good time to get on board this one, not bad growth rate, reasonable PE, and a good industry, I think they are poised for a strong second half of the year, or 2009.

Since I only do this on sundays...
I used Bates' DDM and project 64.02 for this stock.
I undertook my investigation of the electric utilities sector starting with the idea that this is a mature sector, probably the first to get out of any slump.
