AMR Corp (AMR)

CAPS Rating:
*

The Company's operations fall almost entirely in the airline industry.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Huge capacity cuts are coming one way or another. In this basket trade I am fully expecting at least 2 90% losses, but believe they will be more than overcome from the upside to the survivors. If, as I suspect, oil and jet fuel spreads give up a moderate portion of their current levels, the upside...More

This company is going down. Take the second oldest fleet in the country, add terrible on-time performance, sprinkle in some ridiculous fees (including charging for the first checked bag), throw in some piss-poor customer service, and you have a recipe for disaster.

On a side note, I was on an AA f...More

Just because oil is DOWN to $125 doesn't change the fact that this airline was in trouble when oil was at $100.

Besides, I love thumbing this one down because I personally hate flying on it. Live in DFW area though, so basically no choice.

Using yesterday's enormous bump up to put my thumbs down again on some airlines...
With fuel prices where they are (OK coming down a little, but that is temporary), service down the drains for all airlines, all of them laying off people, and the dangers of a recession not yet over, I can only see these guys go down again!

I don’t see the high prices of oil going away…which means the long-term profitability of this company is still crappy. Oil may drop until that first hurricane comes ashore in the US…however when it does those oil prices will jump back up on the speculators which will drive this stock back down. Don’t underestimate Mother Nature!

Someone please raise Cramer from the dead, when Cramer was President of AMR, he knew what to do. The current Wharton graduates need to ask for their money back on their MBAs.

American should cut all routes that are not making money, immediately. Ground the MD-80s type of craft (and that is painful for me to say that) because of fuel costs. Cut back on the number of model of aircraft they fly and increase the number of seats on a plane in the US. Cut gates immediately that are not profitable. Sell American Eagle, which is profitable, for immediate cash flow. Move toward a one or two types of aircraft, one long range, one for national, make killer deals with Boeing, like Cramer did with Douglas in the 1980s. Long term use the sell of American Eagle to purchase a company like NetJet.

The board should immediately plan to relieve the current executive staff of their positions over the next year for less expensive executives that might understand the business of flight. It is clear that the current batch of executives have no clue how to read a spreadsheet and how to deal with Unions. A random selection of executives should be picked and simply fired without comment or explanation as an example to the rest of the executives, and this random selection would include the president as well as his staff.

This company is a diaster waiting to happen.
