Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Company is an owner, operator and franchisor of restaurants featuring a variety of boldly-flavored, made-to-order menu items including Buffalo, chicken wings etc.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

actually am probably a little early on this call, so you don’t have to run out and sell your restaurant stocks immediately, but you probably should do so fairly soon. Restaurant earnings might be pretty decent for the next quarter or two, but this sector is headed for a lot of pain in the relative...More

Buffalo Wild Wings is a luxury not a necessity...The worst is still to come in this recession and people are not going to spend $40-$50 for a family meal when they're not sure if they're going to have a paycheck next month.

With 28% 5-year sales growth and 64.7% 5-year earnings growth this looks like a good growth stock. At a price multiple of 20 and 1.63 earnings estimate for 2009 it also looks like a good garp pick. They still have room to expand in the US as we don't have one of their restaurants yet. According to MSN Money they are currently in 37 states.

Management seems competent and capable of growing brand effectively and conservatively. BWLD should improve when economy improves.

KEEP IN MIND MY PICK IS FOR 5 YEARS OR MORE (nothing shortterm in this pick)

I see an upside to this resturant chain in both todays current economy (aka mess) and in an advancing economy.

During times like these people often tend to resort to escapism (no i'm not referencing old movies back in the day, similar situation) and that escapism is usually choosen based on price. In this case though, they offer two of the most popular forms.
1. Sports: when all else is going wrong there is one thing to count on... Some form or another of sports will provide entertainment for enthusiasts which (and heres the best part) never stops. If it isn't one sport or event, it is another. If there is anything I have learned from being an advid sports fan its this: people may stop buying merchandise or tickets because of lack of money, but they never stop pulling for their team. (people also have to eat. wow, whats that? two great things in one) Any one who knows BWLD will tell you it is packed for every major and alot of minor sporting events. The only problem is getting people to drop alot on the check. That brings me to my next popular form of escapism...
2. Alcohol: Need I say more? When many prominant members of the economic community (referring to banks and the FED in this case) can't be a friend in a time of need (caused by them) there are a couple people who stick by you no matter what. Theres a guy named Jack something or other, and his friends Jose, etc etc, who will always comfort you (until the awkward next morning because you don't want the relationship to go further because you don't like the way he made you feel the next day haha). What happens in times of innebriation? mucho spendage by the average consumer, whether they should spend it or not.

This is wy I believe they will not be too effected by these trying times and will do nothing but flourish in the aftermath
