CBS Corp (CBS)

CAPS Rating:
**

A mass media company with operations in the following segments: Television, Radio, Outdoor and Publishing.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

I agree that CBS is extremely shareholder friendly. The company has been bending over backward to supply shareholders with a nice dividend payout. And I do love dividends.

But...

I have to look at CBS in the context of its previous partner in crime -- namely, Viacom. When old-Viacom decided to s...More

Redstone is buying out his daughter's 20% interest. Either there is a TO or private equity LBO play coming, or he is about to make another media industry play himself.

I like the purchase of CNET, and if done right than you can probably slim off some of that fat on cnet and turn it fairly profitable. They need a presence on the Internet that is strong, and works well with the modernizing media outlets, which CNET fills pretty well. Hulu is a good joint venture and I believe they are making similar ventures on the net, however investing in any media company these is very speculative to me. The Internet is not very friendly towards proprietary rights and TV is steadily shifting towards the back burner as the Internet evolves.

Honestly, 2 billion for CNET? The main selling point of CNET was that it was news that wasn't filtered by the pre-biased television media, and now that that's gone, expect an over-time loss of viewership.

But this is just the straw to break the camels back, as CBS is already fighting:

1. Getting back on track after the Writer's Strike.

2. Renewing interest its core series (CSI, etc)

3. Reduced adversting budgets from many of its main sponsors. Ford and GM have been hurting for awhile, and margins for ConAgra and other food companies are getting slim. When your main "customers" are the food and vehicle industries right now, times are going to be lean.
