Crane Co. (CR)

CAPS Rating:
***

The Company is a diversified manufacturer of engineered industrial products.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

I think the economy is going to bounce back and business and growth will start again slowly of course but it will be back in full swing within a yr.

This company posted a record quarter with improved EPS, increased sales & increased profits. However, the company is facing asbestos related litigation and could lose a chunk of money. Also, the company may find their margins squeezed due to the rising cost of raw materials. Overall, if the company was a little more financially solid, I might have given it an outperform. However, there is something about the financials that makes me uncomfortable and I'm going to go with the minority who say that it will underperform.

Crane is the dominant player in industrial valves. All the refinery expansions, ethanol plants, CTL plants play into their favor. Plus, they have been one of the market's top performing stocks for 50 years. In the market sweet spot with a long history of superior performance. What's not to like.

CR is a wide-ranging conglomeerate; think of it as a small-fry DHR or UTX. The catch here is that it is growing at a faster rate than its larger competitors, has a modest valuation relative to its operating margin, ROE, and ROA, and is rock-solid in its dividend distributions.

Definitely an OUTPERFORM, look for CR to be in the 48-54 range within a year to 18 months, then we'll take another look at it and see where it goes from there.
