I'm not sure people realize the fundamental change that has occurred in DOW's business model. Several joint venture companies have been formed and virtually every one will provide DOW with distinct advantages relative to raw materials and markets. The Saudi JV provides a stable, low cost supp...More

Dow is in a cyclical business, and the peak of its earnings occurred in late 2005-early 2006. Persistently high natural gas costs in NA have been and will continue to depress earnings from this geographic region, which presents approx 40-50% of Dow's worldwide sales.

DOW is changing it's business focus but is still in the same general business. It is selling some products parts and buying others. It has positive earnings, is in a business that does cycle and is currently at the lower portion of the cycle. The need for chemicals by agriculture and industry is not going to go away. So this is a good entry point. In a few years there will be a good exit point, but in the meantime it's providing a dividend of more that 5 percent.

New 52 week low. Restructuring story from commodity to specialty chemical company. High dividend yield. Recent acquisition of Rohm and Haas should be positive long term catalyst.

2nd Time around - Price fell during my first thumbs up but I cannot ignore the fundamentals on a proven company. Glad it is closer to its 52 week low and may go even lower at first but for the long term its worth sticking with. I just wanted to get in at a lower price for a better upside.

Besides crashing down through the 200 Day and the 50 Day Moving Average; DOW has knocked out the supports of the March 2008 low and the January 2008 low. This stock is trading below the IYM (Basic Materials ETF, of which DOW is a 5.31 percent component). The Basic Marterials Index and DOW are diverging away from one another. I'll wait for the profit picture as well as the charts to improve before I buy this one.

BTW: The IYM and the $DJUSBM are not doing so hot of late.

I do feel that the price paid for Rohm + Haas was excessive, but this is about a company that is trying to transform its business. I am positive about that transformation, and used the downgrade today to intiate a position.
