Endesa S.A. (ADR) (ELE)

CAPS Rating:
*****

The Company is an electricity company in Spain and Portugal in terms of installed capacity and market share in generation and distribution. Its core business is energy, including the supply of natural gas.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Fisher Investments - A Stock for Eco-Nuts Ken Fisher 06.16.08

The Chilean firm Enersis (nyse: ENI - news - people ) (18, ENI) is the largest private-sector electricity generator in South America, serving Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia. Generation is 40% of its revenue; electricity distribution is the rest. As South America modernizes and develops, Enersis will grow. It's controlled and majority-owned by Spain's giant utility Endesa (nyse: ELE - news - people ), which I've recommended many times over the decades. So you know it will be well run. At 1.4 times annual revenue and 19 times likely 2008 earnings, and with a 2.4% dividend, it's more than cheap enough for a nicely growing firm. The American Depositary Receipts for it trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Its market cap is $12 billion.

This company probably won't be a bonanza stock, forget about it. But with a P/E lower than the market average, I guess it will confortably beat the market.

E.ON has been after ELE for quite some time. Their last offer of 40 euros/share was in March. Endesa called off a March 20 shareholder meeting because E.ON raised their offer from 38.75 to 40 euros. That vote count was due April 3, but E.ON withdrew its offer on Monday, April 2, since they received less than 50% of their shareholder votes as the deadline approached. At that time, Italy’s ENEL and Spain’s Acciona said that they would join forces to offer at least 41 euros (currently $54.57) a share for the Endesa stock they don’t already own. In return for not fighting this new offer, E.ON would be awarded some of Endesa’s assets in exchange. Until this is resolved, ELE will languish just under the 41 euro value.
