Elsevier's evil, but it's got a great business model: everybody pays to access its journal information. As long as it keeps getting away with this, it'll do well.

This is a great company, but it is not a great investment. It pretty much mirrors the S&P 500 but with more volatility. You would be better off in an index fund with this one.

As a science grad student, I know exactly how much I, every other student in my department, and our faculty depend on their journals. Our department would sooner do without its physical library than give up our online (high pot'l profit margin) journal subscriptions.

Then, you have to consider that almost all funding requests include a piece to pay for publishing - they have a business where both the author and the reader pays.
