EZCORP, Inc. (EZPW)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Company is primarily a lender or provider of credit services to individuals who do not have cash resources or access to credit to meet their short-term cash needs.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Not a glorious segment...and a tinge of "financial" keeps it down. But it's got a Forward P/E under 9, and a 20% ROE. No debt. This one looks like a clear winner.

The only potential downside is government regulation. But EZPW operates primarily in Texas and the SW where regulation is not on the horizon, and it is expanding its business in Mexico.

Payday loans and pawnshops seem like a great place to be if the economy really does hit the tank, and these guys are big time. EZCorp owns over 700 pawnshops and "short-term" credit operations, churning out over $1Billion in loans in 2007. But even if things don't get "R-word" bad, this stock should perform well. The stock trades at only 10X next years earnings, has grown those earnings annually by at least 25% in each of the last 5 years, and analysts expect continued growth of 20% over the next 5 years. If that's not enough, then the fact that in 2007 EZCorp bought a 15 store pawnshop chain called "Jumping Jack Cash" has to be the deal sealer.

This is a hard one...part of me wants to think it will skyrocket because of the economy and people may shop for deals at the pawnshops. Then again they may get inundated with people needing to pawn things...so I had to go with Underperform. Although, I'd much rather get something from them then hold a garage sale and get nothing but headaches.

When my house gets repossessed, I'll have to pawn my stuff and get a payday advance loan, so I can pay rent on a used trailer.

I may elevate this company to a more long term holding. I always look at this as a company that I own shares in that just seems to always make money.
