General Electric Company (GE)

CAPS Rating:
****

A diversified industrial corporation whose products include major appliances; lighting products; industrial automation products etc. Its services include product services; electrical apparatus installation, engineering, and repair and rebuilding services.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

General Electric's exposure to the capital markets often goes unrecognized. In reality GE has derived the majority of its profits from GE Capital for many years. Despite this fact, GE has outperformed most banks on a PE basis since the credit crisis began. Browsing through the "Underperform" pitc...More

LOng term this company is the best of America. Short term, they are the worst of America. GE is behaving very badly on a 500 pt up day. That speaks volumes about what investors believe may be in store. They have a centipede of financial shoes in their business model, and lots of intangibles. I'm not going to short this in real life, which is rare, as my CAPs portfolio usually matches my real portfolio. But I have to have a red thumb somewhere in a bear market, and ultrashorts are overbought right now.

Yes, going against Buffett you say, but he' not buying the common stock.

I'm assuming the market has hit rock bottom and will only go up from here. And GE is one of my top picks. Why? Well, for starters Buffet just made a rather large investment in the company. Also, I think its financial division has hit rock bottom, just like the market as a whole, and things can only get better.

Plus I like the fact that GE is researching alternative energy sources like wind & solar. Looking at fundamentals, they have a PE of 12 and a dividend yield of nearly 6%. And before you worry about them cutting their dividend, I really don't think the company is even considering that as an option. They've paid a dividend every year since 1899, and they've increased it every year from 1976 to 2007. That's the kind of company I want to have my money in!

Exceptionally diversified company. Likely to take a hit in the short term due to financial sector trouble. Well positioned for the "green energy" market. Healthcare equipment will continue to do well.

This has long been a good company. The wind turbines will lead the way to profit for this company for the next five or so years. Long term this is an excellent investment, especially at these prices.
