General Motors Corp (GM)

CAPS Rating:
*

The Company is engaged in the worldwide development, production, and marketing of cars, trucks, and parts.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Those that keep bashing GM don't know much about autos or have not owned a GM vehicle in the last 5 years or so.

Cars as a market segment are in big trouble, and within this segment, it's hard to find a dumber or less innovative company than GM. Read this quote from GM's Vice Chairman (excerpted from Reuters.com):

Once people realize that GM won't go bust, it will go up largely.

Market cap of less than $3 Billion fro GM? Crazy. I have driven three new leased GM vehicles for many miles in the past few years and they were all really good cars. My Impala with a V6 got 30+ MPG cruising at 70 mph. After driving Toyotas and Hondas for the past 25 years, I was pleasantly suprised and genuinely impressed with the vehicle quality and driving characteristics. Now, if they would only correct the darned AC / Heating control so it lets ME determine where the air comes from (rather than constantly switching it to get air from the out side, thereby fumigating the inside of the car and me with diesel exhaust fumes) then I would be 100% happy with the GM cars I have been driving.

They'll eke out a living until the Volt saves them in 2010 / 2011. After that they'll be toe to toe with the Japanese.

They refuse to innovate their design of most vehicles, rebadge the same vehicle 2 or 3 times with a different grille and hubcaps but everyone knows its the same car, and they offer wayyyyy too many options. Anyone remember the Cadillac Cimmiron? Yeah you do it was a Chevy Cavalier with leather seats and power windows. It's these kind of ideas that have driven GM into the ground. You don't see Toyota or Nissan offering that many different versions of the same car. Either you can afford a $25K Camry or a $60K Lexus but there is not going to be a $44K middle brand that no one respects because they know you can't afford the Lexus but its just a gussied up Toyota (AKA Buick). Enough said. These guys will never get it. Oh yeah and the union will bleed them dry.
