THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON:

Congress' failure to extend a key investment credit for the railroads means that G&W's tax rate jumps dramatically this year. The recently lapsed legislation allowed short-line operators to claim a tax credit of $0.50 for every dollar spent on infrastructure improvements.

THE BEAUTIFUL TRUTH:

G&W is likely to realize better pricing as the trend towards rail transport continues and the weakening dollar seems likely to persist.

Genesee is added to its recent string of acquisitions of contiguous rail road systems with Ohio Central Railroad System in early august for just $219 million in cash (plus up to an additional $25 million in contingency payments). OCRS operates over 445 miles of track in Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. It is expected to add $70 million in revenues to G&W's top-line in 2009 and some $20 million to its operating income which is one of the main reasons i am drawn to GWR.

Strategic acquisitions are a key long-term growth driver for Genesee as evidenced by G&W's four other acquisitions in the past year alone. These properties allow G&W to better serve shippers and allow them to avoid track-use fees. A broad global portfolio of short-line rails and port operations, meanwhile, should limit the impact of regional economic softness on G&W's results.

The recent dip that saw shares plunge down to 33 dollars per share should be looked at as an opportunity to start a position and or accumulate more shares. This is a long-term buy and hold strategy that will take advantage of the impending changes to the US economic landscape.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce sees freight railroad use jumping 88% over the next 25 years.

"All the evidence is there that the train is returning to a degree once never expected [and that] an economic and cultural tsunami is about to transform the United States," says Harvard professor John Stilgoe, author of the recently published book Train Time. "Change is everywhere along the railroads....Track is being expanded, modernized and relaid, and once-abandoned rail right-of-ways are being reclaimed. And what you are seeing now is only the beginning. The best is yet to come."
