HNP is China's largest power producer by capacity. Recently, it agreed to buy Tuas Power Ltd. for about $1 billion to expand into Singapore, which could promise to be a big market. This transaction will give Huaneng Power a 25 percent share of Singapore's power-generating capacity, which can reduce ...More

Yes, demand for energy is growing in China. Yes, Huaneng is the biggest, most stable player in the energy market. Yes, the company's board has good connections with the CCP's top brass. Yes, almost every CAP player disagrees with me and I'm probably a lower-case fool.

HNP gets the green thumb. They are going to continue getting pinched by high coal prices. However, the Chinese government recently raised the price of gasoline, and eventually they will logically have to raise the price of power. When? I don't know.

So, what we have left is a power company with a lot of capacity in a growing economy that needs all of their product, a reasonable valuation, some upside potential with clean power technology, and a heap of debt. Looks like a typical utility stock--something to pay dividends and maybe appreciate a bit. Compared to the financial and consumer laden S&P, I'll take the power company.

I simply used the screener to find all of the 5 star stocks with the greatest 52-week losses. 5 stars should make them good picks and the high 52-week loss should make them cheap. We’ll see how it works!

This is part of the Fooligan project. I'm hoping that there's a prize in it for me, but who knows?
Anyway, HNP is a power company in China that is trying out a new nuclear technology developed by Siemens Group and ABB. It sounds like a pretty sweet concept, making nuclear cleaner, safer, and more cost effective than ever before. It's a modulated, uranium pebble-powered, helium-cooled reactor. It produces no toxic heavy water, but reuses the helium after it cools, leaving no ecological dilemma. The easily expanded modulated design decreases costs and improves flexibility. This is clean energy at its finest.
Meanwhile, their coal plants should lose less money in the near future as China responds to the high price of coal in its slow, communist way.
