Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (HOT)

CAPS Rating:
**

The Company conducts its hotel and leisure business both directly and through its subsidiaries. Its operations are grouped into two business segments, hotels and vacation ownership and residential operations.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

I love this company's hotels, but dislike their last earnings release. The company warned of earnings which will come in more than 10% lower than 2007. The multiple of 18x a reasonable 2009 estimates is ridiculous given the recession we are now just entering. I hadn't liked this stock before for thi...More

Much (about 40% right now) of their earnings comes from overseas. May not be the bottom since this one moves with the industy) but should way outperform the index over the next year or two

This pick is part of my ongoing trashing of the lodging/leisure sector. Starwood is a frist-class company, but the stock won't be going anywhere soon. Call me crazy, but I think leisure travel is in for a protracted slump. As an added bonus for this industry, many companies are cutting back on business-related travel - informing staff to travel only when absolutely necessary (e.g. listen in on the conference call rather than going to the conference). Airlines and hotels will suffer. The airlines have acted in anticipation of this by cutting back on flights. Hotel companies don't have that luxury and will have to deal with significant vacancies, even companies like Starwood that don't have huge exposure in hotspots like Vegas. Which reminds me, convention business will be hit hard too. If you're bullish in spite of all the market indicators, please disregard all of the above.

This sector will continue to suffer from hyper-inflation and worldwide recession. It will also be the last to recover. Don't let strong management and past earnings fool you.
