IMAX Corp (USA) (IMAX)

CAPS Rating:
****

An entertainment technology company specializing in digital and film based motion picture technologies, whose activities are the design, manufacture, sale and lease of theater systems based on proprietary & patented technology for large-format theaters.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

IMAX is a solid long term investment. It has a stellar brand name, superior technology, and is positioned to profit from current trends. However, it is in trouble with litigation from a creditor and has delayed financial disclosures. It has not had a profitable year since 2005. They probably won't s...More

So long as they have dual-CEOs, and so long as they are unable to come up with digital projector design, they will not be able to maximize earnings. The CEOs have to quit, new management can take this one further. Unfortunately, I have lost money on this one. But I expect it to trade above $10 af...More

Slowly, slowly, more IMAX theaters are starting up. I have high hopes for this stock in the next few years as more people have the opportunity to see movies in this venue.

Personal pick. In theatre experiences, IMAX provides the best quality available. Business-wise, I see the stock being stable.

Horror vacui - Fear of empty places.

The gigantic screen has not translated into gigantic profits.

They carry a bunch of debt, which limits their options for expansion. If I owned a movie theater, I am not sure that now is the time I would want to invest in pricy upgrades.

There is no long term upward trend to their sales, despite their breakthrough technology. If it has not caught on yet, why will it do so in the future?

Sales are down, margins are down, and it has a negative return on assets. These are especailly dangerous for a company pulling a big wagon of debt.

Negative earnings for the past year. No growth potential. When was the last time you saw an IMAX film? Case closed. Save your money.
