Itron, Inc. (ITRI)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Company provides solid-state meters, automated meter reading technology, enterprise-wide software platforms, and real-time analytic applications for energy and water providers worldwide.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Net metering is growing a great rate for investors. Itron has some great technology for the best customers in the world, government and utilities. As pressure grows to lower operating costs for both of these entities, Itron is well positioned to sell them the products they need.

The stock was extremely hyped over the past few months and not that much has changed within the company from a year ago that would justufy the stock's meteoric rise. They grow primarily by acquisition and have not had any significant product developments over the past 5 years. The acquisition of A...More

Great meters that improve efficiency for both electricity and water.

Here's a lop-sided company. In the trailing 12 months, they earned $0.52. By close of next year, the analysts expect them to have earned $4.37. That's an annualized increase of 313%! Meanwhile the same analysts expect ITRI to continue to grow afterward at 20% for the following 5 years. This brings the annualized earnings growth down to and earth-orbit level of 73% vs. ttm. That provides us with a PEG of 2.6. Way to high for my tastes; however, if these earnings growths do materialize, we'll see stock prices of $275 in five years assuming a reasonable p/e of 25. (I don't tend to argue with double baggers).

All of that random numbers gibberish leads me to another question. At $275, this company will be a 10B company. Is this market large enough to house a company that large? Assuming a price/sales of 2, they would have to sell 5B year in and year out to sustain a 10B market cap. Are there really that many gas, water and electric meters world wide? I might consider this company IRL, if they pulled back to the $75 range. . .

Smart metering technology is where it is at and these guys are the big fish in a relatively small pond.
