This and BWP are essential to own in the commodity space, almost everything else commodity related are in a bubble. USU is also worth a nibble, but JAG is one of the few core mining companies that can make a lot of money as gold slides back toward $750 and lower.

I'm actually neutral on JAG, but since I have a background in mining geology, I have some comments from a different prespective than most of you. JAG has several relatively small gold mines in an historically important gold district. The nearby Morro Velho mines have been in production since 1834, the oldest mine in continuous production in the world. Total historic production is 470 tons of gold (15 million oz) as of 2006. Some mines were over 3000 m deep. The complex is currently owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AU) and has one operating mine producing about 250,000 oz/yr. Grades run about 7 gm/t and cash production costs are just under $200 /gm. JAG's mines are geologically similar. The romance here is that JAG's mines have much greater potential reserves since they are open laterally and at depth.

So, what's not to like? Some of JAG's properties were bought from AU. Why? It's not like AU doesn't know what it's doing. Interestingly, two of JAG's senior personnel use to be with AU. JAG's cash costs are $325-350/oz. Perhaps operating efficencies will improve. JAG claims production will be up to 300,000 oz/yr in three years, more than AU, the most experienced operator in the district. AU also has considerably more reserves than JAG. Last, most of JAG's production will be underground. The deposits are narrow- probably 1-2 m - and I suspect discontinuous. I'm confident JAG will increase their reserves, but the nature of the deposits suggests cost will be high and it will be very difficult to ramp up to 300,000 oz/yr.

On the finance side, I didn't spent a lot of time on the financial statements, but they are extensively footnoted. It would take a lot of time to get a handle on them. They are 10% owned by a company called Brazilian Resources which is traded in the pink sheets. I couldn't find much info on them but the CEO and the corporate address is the same as JAG's. Also, JAG is raising capital by selling stock - can you say dilution?

In summary, JAG may have the potential to turn into a junior miner, but there are too many red flags for me.
