LandAmerica Financial Group, Inc. (LFG)

CAPS Rating:
*

The Company is engaged principally in the title insurance business.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

I guess since LFG cratered today I should add a pitch and 'splain myself: LFG is a title insurance company, they sell insurance that you don't really own your home that you have title to. I tend to like insurance companies that sell meteor or robot insurance - the ones that tend to make underwriting profits in most circumstances (most insurance companies only make money on their investing activities). As I understand it, claims increase when the real estate market is bad for title insurers, because people are looking for someone to sue. This too shall pass. Now, LFG does have the issue of having somewhat fixed costs and declining revenues (operating leverage) - this is causing LFG to operate at a loss while real estate transactions are at depressed levels. This too shall pass. At some point the real estate market will turn around and transactions will increase and LFG will return to profitability. Personally I expect this to happen around Q2 or Q3 of 2009. LFG is worth much more than its current price if this does occur. I cannot tell you whether the intrinsic value of LFG is $25 or $100 but am certain it's significantly higher than the $16 I paid - there's a good margin of safety. Thank you for your time, and attention.

This company has survived the worst, is shoring up it's balance sheet, scaling back on employees and expenses, and has expanded into foreign markets at a time when the domestic US market tanked. If they can hold on, this could be a 100 dollar stock in 5 years; if not, you don't have much to lose at 10 bucks. Highly speculative, but they do have a good chunk of cash. 20/share last I checked, but a lot of that is going for reserves against real losses.

Failed to meet earnings expectations. Mortgage Title insurance. Decent financial history, just a big nail in their road.

We are finally seeing data in the mainstream media that reflects the beginning of the housing crisis. Foreclosures are up to record highs. Congress will make attempts to stop us from going into a spin, and while it may not hurt it certainly won't be of much help. I remain personally bearish on anything to do with housing for the intermediate to long term. Adding this stock to CAPS will allow me to watch it closely, and hopefully take a long position when we are near the beginning of the end of this ride.
