Medarex, Inc. (MEDX)

CAPS Rating:
***

A biopharmaceutical company developing therapeutic products for cancer, inflammation, autoimmune disorders and other life-threatening and debilitating diseases based on its proprietary technology.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Medarex develops human monoclonal antibodies. Lots of ‘em. When it comes to drug development there’s a gradient from having tons of drugs in your pipeline/lots of partners to having few drugs in your pipeline/little or no partners (see ITMN). It’s up for debate as to whether one way is better tha...More

I've had a lot of success playing Medarex, obviously, and I want to keep adding to my lead. While I'm long-term negative on the company due to their insistence on clinging to the ineffective drug Ipilimumab, they do have a revenue-generating MAb production platform and no recent negative catalysts to justify the decline to four year lows.

MEDX is close to getting approval for Ipilimumab which is an immunotherapy drug that causes the immune system to kick in and attack melanoma cancer. They have had some delays since Dec. of last year but they are poised to finish Phase 3 clinical trials showing imporved overall survival. Doctors are very posiive about this drug as well as patients who overwhlemingly discuss among themselves the benefits they have recieved, you can read these discussion at www.mpip.org which is a forum for patients who have melanoma.

Broad, strong pipeline - three approvals nearing which will validate their mAb platform - also they're sitting on a mountain of money and they are precisely what big pharma is looking for in an acquisition (except, perhaps, the complexity involved due to numerous licensing agreements)
