Done with restatements. Industry is at the trough, with demand soon to pick up again. Big government/military business, building a lot of MRAPs right now.

Cashing in a +5 after an unusual reload on a huge loss, not to mention the clueless, small loss I took before I understood how addlepated the "accuracy" measure's incentives are. Still so far a loser overall, but should the stock keep moving it'll be worth it for the reloads. Stupid, trinary "accur...More

Cheap 20 points ago. Will rebound dramatically after the credit markets free up. Military contracts will provide plenty of safety and cash flow.

Yes, the debt load is obscene. True, too, rival BAE just swiped a big armored vehicle order. But the P/E is too low for logic on this one, and I get a BOTEV valuation close to $12 billion, suggesting it's about 20% undervalued.

If Navistar can do a bit of debt paydown, I bet we'll see that P/E expand a bit.

Navistar has been winning a lot of military contracts and the company looks poised to win even more. The company is the first to enter the hybrid market and that will pay off handsomely sometime very soon.

Navistar runs its business in two main segments:

- Trucks: supplies heavy (class 6-8) trucks and buses, including military MRAPs which comprise about 25% of their heavy truck sales. With the high diesel prices, truck transportation will continue to lose its attractiveness as other forms of transportation (rail) prove to be more efficient. Heavy trucks for transportation will continue to be a challenging environment.

- Engines: supplier to Ford and other OEMs. Ford is the major customer with about 50% of their diesel engines - however its already scaling back its light truck production, so engine sales will continue to be challenged in the near term.

These two main segments will have strong challenges in the year ahead. Although there are positive developments, declining volumes in their traditional markets won't be replaced by new business.

In addition, Navistar continues to face strong competition from Freightliner (subsidiary of Daimler) and Mack (subsidiary of Volvo). Neither are going away soon.
