NYMEX Holdings, Inc. (NMX)

CAPS Rating:
***

The Company provides facilities to buy, sell and clear energy, precious and base metals, and soft commodities for future delivery under rules intended to protect the interests of market participants.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

NYMEX followed the recent trend among U.S exchanges of going public and whose initial public offering had a great demand helping it mop around $300 million. It owes its success to the simple business model enabled by technology and attractiveness of the futures instrument. Huge fixed cost makes entr...More

If congress passes emissions reduction bills and NYMEX becomes the main exchange for trading carbon credits, ths company will be major. However, we are looking at a longer time frame then I orginally thought to find out if this actually takes off, but I think it will. We need to free ourselves from such a high degree of need for oil given suplly and demand concern and the fact that we do not control the market.

If you have a long time horizon this is definitely a good bet. They already have a foothold with their green exchange, and that should continue to grow.

I think the CME and NMX exchanges are going to benefit in a historic fashion once we (hopefully for my financial benefit) adopt carbon emissions system similar to Europe which requires companies to acuire carbon credits and futures contracts are built off of these credits. Hopefully it happens in the next presidential term, Bush is opposed, but I think all the new potential pres. are game for it. This will be big business for whoever is the big player, and with both of these companies commanding 90% of the future market, I see big things. Even if it didn't happen the way I see it, these are not bad companies to hold anyway and now is a good buy-in point.

Same story as with CME, ICE... I like their recent buy of a 15% stake in dry bulk futures contracts market IMAREX (Oslo).

This stock is currently undervalued in the current buyout deal with CME. Currentyly it should be valued at 103 if CME is doing a buyout of NMX shareholders of $36 a share and .13 shares of CME per share of NMX.

I anticipate this stock going up as CME goes up, but for sure hitting the 103 level.
