*****

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

In choosing my first pick, I wanted a solid growth stock that I felt has the potential to be a multibagger within the next few years with little downside risk. It's asking a lot, but PRAA is a company positioned for an explosion.

It's sad but true. People are in debt with their houses, their cars, their credit cards. And with the economy in such bad shape and the specter of job losses coming over the horizon. PRAA is in a position now to buy up loads and loads of debt and super low prices. Virtually any cash recovery at all will bring them good profits. It's sad that they will do so well from this situation! But hey! That's capitalism.
Get in quick before everyone else realises this stock is so good and pushes the price to more realistic levels.

Should be better leveraged than most give them credit for going forward. This economy is like Monday Night Football and their the home team. They should deliver.

It's too bad.

When I first discovered this company, my first reaction was "wow, what a great business". They are the biggest and the best company in the area of buying distressed consumer debt. Their growth year over year have been impressive, and they are poised to increase their ROE by using leverage. In any normal economic situation, I would be buying.

But we are not entering a normal economic situation.

The current financial crisis is sure to crush the US economy. The problem is that when that happens, the people who will lose the most will be the people who are making payments to PRA. In response, the company has started making allowance charges already, but this is just the beginning. PRA usually collects over many years, which means that entering the recession, (or depression, whichever happens to be) many debtors will stop making payments early in the payment cycle. This will bring huge allowance charges to the company, undermining their profits not only in the short run, but in the long run.

After the recession, if the company is still here, I will buy. But this is really not the time.

If I had money, I'd be getting INTO the market, not out, at this time.
