RenaissanceRe Holdings (RNR)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Company with its operating subsidiaries, is a provider of reinsurance and insurance.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Look at the P/E !!!

4.75 at the time of this rating. Seems like a great value play to me. Nice returns, solid business, good management.

On May 1, Goldman Sachs cut their rating of RNR from buy to neutral, unsettled about money flooding the reinsurance market, despite their belief that RNR is the "preeminant writer of property catastrophe reinsurance." Why is Goldman wrong?

Compared to others in the field, RNR has a relatively wide moat because of their full spectrum of insurance product offerings and low production costs. RNR's businesses include property catastrophe reinsurance and specialty reinsurance (workers' compensation, personal injury & liability, aviation & terrorism).

While this diversity is nice, I like RNR because of their strong company leadership, who has shown their willingness to play a contrarian role--writing policies where others won't and withdrawing when others are charging in and competition makes profits unlikely.

They are scraping a 52 week low, with decent value metrics that, although higher than their industry brethren, are well-deserved (P/E 6.70, P/S 2.04, P/B 1.16). They manage a respectable 1.9% annual dividend on a very sustainable 12% payout ratio. I also like that RNR have been repurchasing their shares at these lower prices.

They have underperformed for several difficult years (notably 2005), but I think RNR will set themselves apart from the rest of the reinsurance field in the not so distant future.

Found this company under the insurance tag. Sell all property insurance and casualty stocks, or see your portfolio bcome a casualty! Warren Buffett is negative on the sector and that's good enough for me. Financial sector s--t has to work iits way through the whole goose.
