The Ryland Group, Inc. (RYL)

CAPS Rating:
*

A homebuilding and mortgage-finance company. The Company consists of six segments: four geographically-determined homebuilding regions, financial services, and corporate.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Okay ... so I tried a swing short on some of the homies that had popped up a few weeks ago. Most of them worked out for minor gains and a few lost. Now, with the rate cuts, Fed. stimulus, gas going down and whatever else, ... changed my thinking that now is the time to be accumulating home builders ...More

The funny thing about Ryland is that it is headquartered within 200m of Countrywide in Calabasas, California. That cannot be a reassuring feeling considering the situation.

It is easy to be a bear on homebuliders, but over 1.5B of it's balance sheet is represented in current inventory and land opti...More

The housing bill is a huge deal. I don't think people realize how big.

The investment thesis is based on the homeowner bailout that's coming soon, in a few days or weeks perhaps, but at any rate no longer than 6 months (we might have to wait till the inauguration in case the cowboy freaks out). The bailout will have a triple effect. First, instead of getting a foreclosure note, homeowners will laugh all their way to the bank, hence no inventory to compete with builders. Second, the market timers and bottom fishers will realize that all is lost, and the pent-up demand for hundreds of thousands of units will hit the market literally within 24 hours after the bill is signed. Third, prospective buyers will learn their lesson: buy a house, any house, at any price, and either you'll make lots of dough, or the government will rob someone more responsible than you to make your investment whole, and you'll make lots of dough anyway. RYL's houses are not cheap, which is another plus. The opportunities in the entry-home segment are closing rapidly, and the closer you are to TOL's luxury-home model, the easier it will be for you to adjust.

a few housing construction stocks have popped up on my momentum screen...

signaling an end to what investors have seen as the housing slump.

Also, history repeats itself in this sector --- look at the market in 2000-2003. While everything was sinking, the only sector that was steadily rising was HOUSING.
