The Southern Company (SO)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Company through its traditional operating companies, provides electric service in four Southeastern states.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Two factors of concern:1) if the Dem incumbent PSC member loses the runoff election in Dec 2006 then the largest subsiduiary of SO will likely have a hostile regulatory environment; bad news with a rate case scheduled for 2007, 2) major capital expenditures likely as the South continues to grow; wi...More

I like electric companies to run up on the back end of the energy boom, they still have not seen then gains that natural resources have but I do think they are the next to run up

Southern Company primary business is the ownership and operation of electric utilities in four states in the American South East, but they also have fiber optics and wireless communications businesses. At this price, it displays good value metrics (P/E 15.30; P/S 1.72; and P/B 2.14) and is paying a 4.8% annual dividend on seemingly solid financial strength (Q-.50; C-.90).

It has a record of 242 quarters (60+ years) of dividends, which have consistently increased over the last 7 years. It has held the top ranking in customer satisfaction among U.S. electric service providers for the last 9 years.

I believe there may be some sputtering with the price in the short term, but that the future trend is decidedly upward. Looks oversold with RSI of 39.12. Recommended.
