Tiffany & Co. (TIF)

CAPS Rating:
***

The Company is a jeweler and specialty retailer. It sells timepieces, sterling silverware, china, crystal, stationery, fragrances and accessories. It is also engaged in product design, manufacturing and retailing activities.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

TIF will outperform as jitters about retail sales will bring down the market but a high end retailer like TIF will keep chugging along. It also looks strong technically so I am in this as a short term (weeks to months) trade.

Outrageous prices for mechandise and the shares. Diamond demand will drop with the coming credit implosion. The PE should be 12 on these peaking earnings.

Many new retail outlets to buy your bling. Virtually recession proof.

11% net profit margin. Always in style.

Tiffany & Co. by all accounts looks to do well in the coming months and year(s) as the Company continues to pursue new retail locations and is increasing online sales. I have personally visited the NYC flagship store and the brand new Nashville location, and I frequent the website (and regularly receive their e-mailer) and I have nothing but praise for the ultra-elite jewelry company. I just wish I had more money to actually purchase the exsquisite goods rather than just drool over the keyboard and the protective glass cases in the stores. The value of precious metals is increasing, which will likely result in higher prices for the T & Co. product lines, but that has never stopped the uber-rich from stopping and dropping a dime before. It's also worth mentioning that many of the Company's sterling silver items, designed by various prestigious artists, are often more affordable and may serve to entice the greater populace and only enhance the Company's profits in the months and years to come.
