Washington Mutual, Inc. (WM)

CAPS Rating:
*

The Company is a consumer and small business banking company with operations in major U.S. markets.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Third time around at this, man these financials are a tough bunch.

The decline been so bad in the bank group that the BKX Index is now 24% under its 200-day moving average.

That's an extraordinarily large spread that has been seen only five other times in its history - 10/7/98, 7/23/02, 10/7/02, 1...More

I worked for WaMu for 3 years recently and I can say without hestitaion that current executive management is fully responsible for the mess they find themselves in. KK and his top half-dozen people are not capable of saving the bank, they must go.

Writedowns have been smaller than expected in 2Q earnings so far. This is beaten down so badly that if they can beat estimates it could jump over 100%. Priced for near term bankruptcy.

Not recommending it as a long term investment, but its probably a good gambling option for the next month or so. Market sentiment went from rally mode to doom and gloom mode ridiculously fast. Sell this once market gets back to a reasonable level, but buy it now while everyone is still recovering from the recent panic.

WM is not going to go broke. Shorts have tried to kill the stock and have oversold it. Naked shorts did much of the damage but the company is fundamentally solvent with 40 billion in liquid assets. While housing is a long time from settling, the long term and short term for WM make it a very attractive stock. This stock easily goes to 12 by Dec. That is more than double from here. I also predict that this could be a buyout target. The stock was a lot cheaper last week before the SEC put an end to the naked short trading. The game of manipulation will come to an end and the silly, truly silly talk about liquidity will come to an end. A growing economy doesn't conduct itself like an 75 year old school teacher with no debt. Without debt, nothing would function. Farms would not work, small business would fail, and people would have to be renters. The amount of foreclosures is low in comparison to the overall picture. But what is happening is that home flippers and young not so bright speculators are going to walk away from their bad investments. That may sound bad at first blush but it is really quite good. This will limit their credit in the marketplace and prevent future bubbles from forming. In my opinion the housing markets must assume the 80 year real estate line. When will this happen? It will occur about twelve months after foreclosures have peaked. More simply we are at about year 2005 and have knocked only about three years off the froth of the real estate bubble. This will accelerate until we get back to 1993 prices. Then they will drift even lower to about 1985 prices before the market in housing stabilizes. What does this mean? it means that the housing prices were never meant to reach bubble formation. This was greenspan's doing and the efforts of hedge funds pumping up the mortgage liquidity. When do I think the real estate markets will finally settle out? 2012. It will stair step down in an orderly fashion. As is the tradition, as the small banks and savings and loans fail, and they will, the larger banks including WM will consolidate. I expect WM to be 40 dollars a share by 2010

The government jawboning of the past couple days has moved this up far enough to where it's worth shorting. I'd say longer than a "year or so," but odds are WM will go the way of IndyMac in less time than that.
