Costco Wholesale Corp (COST)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Company operates membership warehouses that offer low prices on a limited selection of nationally branded and selected private label products in a range of merchandise categories in no-frills, self-service warehouse facilities.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Costco, Big Lots, and Wal-Mart are all going to move upward onward for as long as gas prices keep climbing, the housing market is in the dumps, and the dollar keeps dropping. The middle/lower class are starting to feel the pain in their wallets. Some think that this US economic slowdown will be shor...More

Love this company.

Let me say it again, I Love this company.

But, the price is out of touch with reality. It takes time; lot's of time to identify candidate sites for stores, purchase the land, and get the building in the ground and operating.

Sure, you might see more bargain hunters in a recession, but I don't think Costco makes its money by selling giant food bags. A look at their website confirms my suspicion that this place wants to be Sears with tall ceilings (and giant food).

I just don't think any new or increased customer base is going to outweigh the hit they take to electronics, appliances, discretionary things. Also, I'd agree with some of the others here when they say the price is ahead of itself. Clearly a fan favorite with the green thumb crowd, this place has to live up to its own optimistic valuation.

Along with Wal-Mart and Amazon these may be the main buying centers in the future. The forward looking P/E ratio is about 14, which would likely improve further with less competition and an average economy.

In the presence of discretionary spending tightening around NA market, I believe companies like Costco will benefit due to its vast selection of goods and value for its customers. Yes, spending will be negatively impacted by increases to unemployment, and other economic variables, however, Costco can offers its customers daily necessities are competitive prices....

I think in this climate they will be hurt just like other retailers in a soft economy; however, they have a strong business model that will attract cost conscious customers...
