salesforce.com, inc. (CRM)

CAPS Rating:
*

The Company is a provider of application services that allow organizations to easily share customer information on demand. It also provides CRM service to businesses of all sizes and industries worldwide.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Their product is simple to use and flexible. They seem to be succeeding at selling to major corporations. Once they get a foot in the door their products tend to spread and stick around for a long time. Expenses will stabilize as the product matures and the profits will keep rolling in.

The PE is way high. around 200. The world needs this type of product, but these guys are giving it away and not making any money. I sell a competing product SAGE CRM and CRM.COM so I am familiar with the market. Feature wise it is competitive but they are not executing their sales strategy in such a...More

it is involved in cloud computing, the customer pays as he goes, instead of longterm license like MSFT

Are you serious? 87 P/E ratio in today's economy? An easily duplicated and delivered technology at this kind of premium is pure speculative folly. Even doubling every year makes it years before the P/E will be in line, and by then they will be completely diluted with competition. Juggernaut Microsoft is on their tail! And if you don't think Microsoft can be a danger look at Playstation. X-box killed it. That shows you Microsoft is capable when they need to be. KISS YOUR MONEY GOOD-BYE and put me on the put options express!

The PE is too high. I just don't see it killing earnings estimates in this environment.

SaaS is not anywhere as exciting as it used to be. Along with virtualization, there were a basket full of technologies that have been wildly speculative this year. SaaS is one of them. It crashed in September. The role of SaaS is now clear in many enterprises and so is the cost. My own small biz IT company (under $20M) pays over $120,000 a year to CRM! We could use a free CRM like SugarCRM for that price. We have evaluated alternative solutions many times due to the high cost of using CRM. Even in a downturn, CRM has a P/E of 87! People are still way too bullish on this stock. I would expect a reckoning next earnings report. CRM is still a great company with a great story. They will continue to gain market share. There will be a significant uptick with CRM when utility computing merges with SaaS and mobile. This won't start materializing until late 2009. In the meantime, I don't expect CRM to beat the S&P.

With good media and a growing industry I think in the next year they will be ready to rise.

That is, until there is a new No. 1 stock!
