Dominion Resources, Inc. (D)

CAPS Rating:
****

An integrated gas and electric holding company. The company is engaged in the generation, transmission and distribution of power for sale in Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

I think electric utilities as a group have lagged recently, but have good prospects going foreward in a market in termoil.
They are attractive as dividend players in a low interest rate environment. They are " safe harbor" stocks in a "Flight to Quality sense - being Latge Caps with a mature busines...More

Dominion Resources is growing at 10% a year, pays a dividend over 4.5%, and is starting to go green. It is a great infrastructure play. It has pipelines, storage, a LNG terminal, and nuclear power plants.

I'm taking this as a natural gas play. Dominion owns the drilling rights to approximately 600-800 thousand acres of the Marcellus Shale, which is loaded with natural gas. They recently assigned the rights to drill on approximately 115 million acres to Antero Resources for $347 million ($205 million after tax). As part of that deal, Dominion will receive a 7.5% royalty on future natural gas production from the assigned acreage. The Marcellus Shale is luring some of the country's largest gas producers to Pennsylvania. Thanks to a state Supreme Court decision six years ago, Pennsylvania is now one of the biggest natural-gas producing states , if not the biggest , that does not tax the methane sucked from beneath its ground. However, the state legislature is heavily considering a natural gas tax. Evidence of the value that lies within the Marcellus Shale.

Worldwide energy demands only increase. I like a nuclear power producer with a PE under 6 that's still selling a big chunk of it's kwh's too cheap. Utilities are boring, but boring can be a good thing these days.
