Boring, reliable, and a dividend. I love it! With the recovering economy, I expect hiring to pick up, and that means ADP will tick up, too.

ADP before 9/11 was a stock that would split about every 5 years. Times are different now, with their Dealer Services Division making up about 15% of the company and the Automotive business struggling don't look for much movement. If they can unload… More

Picked ADP for CAPS on little more than a recommendation from a former co-worker who explained to me how they make money on "float" in their payroll services business and I thought that was very cool! Turns out they've beaten the market respectably. Also cool. He was a pretty avid trader and was convinced that he could catch up on lost time saving for retirement (he was in his mid 30s) by hopping in and out. I hope he didn't hop out of ADP in the summer of 2017, when the stock went from $119 to $103. I think the company's prospects are good and I like that Bill Ackman owns it. Falling share count. Stable. Reliable. Boring. Outperformer for me so far and I think going forward, too.

Long the 800 lb gorilla in the industry, ADP is the trusted brand for businesses to manage taxes as well as pay employees, manage their time and attendance, benefits, etc. Much of the premium this company receives is due to the apparent moat and the predictability of the business.

This predictability is - inmy opinion - illusory as the attractive economics of the industry draw more and more competition. This competition has two advantages that are unavoidable: new software companies can build their product based upon newer technology and being a smaller player makes it much easier to acheive impressive growth. As customers (and investors) realize this capital will flow to the smaller players and ADP will lose the premium it enjoys. You will never go broke being invested in ADP but I see it being an underperformer over the next year or so.
