This Anglo-Swiss commodity trading and mining company was founded in 1974 by commodity trader Marc Rich as part of Marc Rich & Co AG. After some evolution, name and ownership changes, and the 2013 merger with mining company Xstrata, became Glencore plc (an acronym for Global Energy Commodity Resources). By revenue, Glencore is one of the largest companies in the world, ranking between 10th and 16th, depending on commodity prices.
Glencore controls 150 mines and has 90 offices spread out in 40 countries on 6 continents. 2017 revenue was up 34% to US$205.5 billion, with about 82% resulting from commodity trading. Earnings came in at $0.40 per share. In addition to selling the output of their own mineral, metal, and coal mines, they trade in the output from other companies, plus deal in crude oil, and in the processing and trading of agricultural products.
In 2015, fears over the company’s debt levels prompted investors to dump shares amid a prolonged downturn in the commodity markets. By 2017, Glencore had cut its worrying debt levels in half through asset sales, cost-cutting, and a rebound in the price of metals.
Year end 2017 showed generally healthy year-over-year commodity price increases, including:
copper ?27%
zinc ?38%
lead ?24%
nickel ?8%
cobalt ?108%
ferrochrome ?43%
iron ore ?22%
coal ?31%
crude oil ?22%
The developing battery and electric vehicle trend has raised the demand outlook for copper, nickel, and most significantly cobalt. OPEC production quotas have helped raised the price of crude oil. China's metal imports showed a 59% year-over-year (YoY) increase. India is expected to lead Asian growth in 2018 at about a 7% rate.
The Group’s credit ratings are currently Baa2 (stable) from Moody’s and BBB (positive outlook) from Standard & Poor’s.
Dividends can vary and are scheduled to be a $0.10 per share distribution in May 2018 and a $0.10 per share distribution in Sep 2018.
In addition to this NASDAQ OTC Pink Sheet listing (GLCNF), their stock trades as:
NASDAQ OTC ADR: GLNCY
London Stock Exchange: GLEN
Johannesburg Stock Exchange: GLN
Price: $5.25 | Annualized Dividend: $0.20 | Dividend Yield: 3.81%
