I work as software developer at a large retail operation. The best description of my job is "rewrite old applications to use SQL Server (Microsoft database) so we can stop using Informix(IBM databases)". 40 hours a week my job is to make it so my company can eventually stop paying IBM, because their databases are garbage. Getting off a database is a multi year project. Just cuz companies are paying IBM now doesn't mean they will be in the future.
