I'm a doctoral student and use Wiley services (online journals, etc.) all the time. Their variety of print and online publications give them a solid moat against competition and their products are necessary to a number of sectors (e.g., education,… More

Certainly not a fast growing business. Strong balance sheet. the free cash flows should improve going forward as the company spends in on tech capex. the company has increased dividends for the last 25 years. has not been in a great investment in the last decade, but the company has paid down debt and strengthened its balance sheet over that time. would like to higher share buybacks. Also the options outstanding are falling once they go below a reasonable level the buybacks should start to have a meaningful impact on the shares outstanding.

Extending intent to hold JWA for 2+ years. Market compound annual growth rate has been 7.35% vs. 11.46% for S&P 500 over the period while average annual return on invested capital has been 6.37%. Overall we are disappointed in firm performance versus the S&P 500.

Even though we have failed to beat the performance index over a four-year period, we like the strategic acquisitions Wiley has made since 2012 in the Professional Development and Education segments, which include CrossKnowledge, Profiles International, Efficient Learning Systems, Inscape Holdings, and Deltak. Strategic acquisitions in Talent Solutions, which is a component of the Professional Development segment, added 9% in year-over-year revenue while Deltak added 18% in year-over-year revenue. Even with the strategic growth in targeted segments, Wiley still suffered a net 5.23% year-over-year reduction in revenues.

Even with a reduction in revenues, we are cautiously optimistic Wileys strategic acquisitions coupled with an increased focus on driving digital books sales may offset the reduction in print books and return the firm to top line growth.

Our largest concern is Wileys reduction in journal subscriptions. Journal subscriptions is where we see the largest economic moat for Wiley. Further reduction in journal subscriptions may cause us to change our intent to hold.

I'm not crazy about of it's ratios, but it's price to book and price to tangible book are better than the rest of their industry's, and it's trading well below where it was a year ago.

So, I'll take a shot and figure why not.
