Loews Corporation operates primarily as a commercial property and casualty insurance company. The company operates in four segments: CNA Specialty, CNA Commercial, Life & Group Non-Core, and Other. It provides risk management, information, warranty, and claims administration services; management, professional liability, and other coverages through property and casualty products and services; and commercial surety and fidelity bonds, and warranty and alternative risk services for vehicles. The company also offers standard and excess property, workers? compensation, marine, and boiler and machinery coverages; general and product liability products; commercial auto and umbrella coverages; loss-sensitive insurance programs; and long term care, group reinsurance, and life settlement contracts, as well as underwrites primarily short-tail exposures. In addition, it owns and operates 44 offshore drilling rigs for companies engaged in exploration and production of hydrocarbons. Further, the company is involved in exploring, producing, and marketing natural gas, condensate, natural gas liquids, and oil in the Permian Basin in Texas. As of December 31, 2012, Loews Corporation?s net proved reserves included 825.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas equivalent. Additionally, it engages in the interstate transportation and storage of natural gas and natural gas liquids, and gathering and processing of natural gas. The company owns and operates interstate natural gas pipelines covering approximately 14,170 miles of interconnected pipelines transporting approximately 2.5 trillion cubic feet of gas to customers; and underground storage fields with aggregate working gas capacity of approximately 201.0 billion cubic feet of natural gas. It also owns and operates a chain of 19 hotels, including 17 in the United States and 2 in Canada. The company was founded in 1954 and is headquartered in New York, New York.
