If not THE best transportation (trucking) company, it's definitely one of the best. That beig said, the stock is currently overpriced (around $66). When it drops to around $40, I'll be a buyer!

“Which companies are best poised to take advantage of the remaining fall season upside and keep doing well in a relatively capacity-rich environment next year? Goldman has two recommendations: Landstar System (NASDAQ: LSTR) and XPO Logistics (NYSE: XPO).”:
🔻🔻“
Landstar [...] is technically the company most exposed to truckload spot rates of all the companies covered by Goldman, but its business model of independent BCOs (Business Capacity Operators), shields the company from the effects of rate changes.
“Because of this model, for every 1% change in rates, we estimate this only has a ~0.9% effect on LSTR’s EPS. Further, given the strong demand environment, LSTR can look to offset any potential rate declines by going after volumes,” Goldman wrote. The bank dropped its 12 month price target for Landstar to $142 from $143, still a 16.9% upside from where LSTR is trading today.

• Landstar is benefiting, of course, from tight capacity in the freight truck market.
• Landstar's trucking logistics services follows an "asset-light" model, in which most of its trucking services are sold by commission agents rather than employees and fulfilled by third parties. These third-party providers are broken down into two major groups: small, independent truck contractors, known as independent business capacity owners, or BCOs, and truck brokerage carriers. In 2017, BCOs and truck brokerage carriers accounted for 45% and 48% of total company revenue, respectively.
• Signing on new carriers, in particular BCOs, is essential to sourcing shipping in a tight but growing market.
• [ 🔑 ] Management points out that in the current environment of rising prices, BCOs are attracted to Landstar, which pays a percentage rate on shipments, translating into higher profit for these independent contractors.
• I'll end with a comment made by CEO Gattoni during the first-quarter call, which nicely sums up the execution on truckload volumes needed for Landstar to keep outperforming in the back half of 2018: "We live in a spot market world. We don't have a lot of influence over pricing. So, our team is charged with adding volumes."
