This is one of those plays/investments where, IF you are a consumer of the product then owning the stock can pay for that product and then some. At $17.50/share, the yield is over 6%. If you're going to add to a companies top line for pet supplies and pet meds (aka, you buy pet products), why not let the company pay you back? You can buy any given product from over a dozen online retailers all of them within a very small competitive price range; but PETS is the one stock with a dividend, never mind the only one giving it back at 6%. With a dividend of $1.08/share and good chances for future dividend hikes (yes, even in today's challenge of margin pressures), a few hundred shares provides a few hundred bucks or a full year's outlay for a pet's food and meds. IF you have the means to invest, even every veterinarian and animal shelter would be wise to get their supplies from PETS and happily cash that dividend check. Sure Chewy may be the larger and more recognizable retailer name, but that doesn't mean they will put every other retailer out of business. On the contrary, when an investor looks at the companies performance and sees losses vs profit, debt vs cash, and junk grade ownership vs a 6% yield; PETS is clearly the better investment (especially, if you're already a consumer of the product). Quite arguably, if you are a pet owner PETS paints a very compelling argument to buy some shares of PETS and start purchasing your pet supplies through PetMed Express.

The shorts have been holding on to their dream of riches from this little stub for a long, long time. The short interest continues to hover at a very high 48% of float. And so far, they've been absolutely correct. This company's stock has come down from nearly $50 a share last June to under $21 a share, a close to 2 year low.
The problem here is a lot of investors seem to think that the competition for this firm, namely Chewy and Amazon, is going to continue to crush their margins. Some have called this a value trap. I just don't see it. They've been around for more than 20 years and have an extremely solid customer base. Chewy is also aggressively pricing products to switch customers, and take away new business. I don't think this will continue forever. Competition is a huge risk, but I think it is very well priced in at this juncture.
Fundamentally speaking, this company looks extremely strong. Their ROE is a very strong 34%. Cash flow is about 12X current price. They have no debt. Balance sheet is crazy strong and they have good flexibility to make necessary strategic decisions. They pay a 5.5% dividend. They hold cash of about $93MM on their balance, about $4.50 per share. I think they stabilize at $20 or maybe a little lower. I am putting this out as a marker to keep an eye on it. I personally think the bad news is priced in. Any good news and this will move much, much higher. I haven't bought yet, but if it dips under $20 I will most likely open a small position.
