The dividend is the only reason to own this company but as long as the company keeps AUM steady or rising it is solid as they come. Why you may ask? About twenty percent of the equity of this company was sold when it went public. The largest holder of the remaining eighty percent not sold when it went public is Dan Och (with the rest going to a subset of his direct reports and that particular circle has shrunk not grown). Dan's main income source is dividends or distributable earnings if you will (He personally "took home" 300 to 500 million for funds managed in 2013 alone which is more than all the salary and incentive comp paid to salaried employees combined). My only minor concern is that fund investors will wise up and realize that taking all of this money out of the company every year leaves very little money to innovate, hire, pay employees, fund investment research projects, and actually build something more substantial that will endure. Maybe Dan is worth it… but when the guy taking home the lion’s share of income retires etc… what will be left?
